A space to write is the most important part of Tablo. It should be easy-to-use, free from distractions, and be somewhere you can plan and organize your ideas and get them down quickly. Tablo does all this.

Chapters

Chapters are your book's building blocks. Tablo creates your first chapter for you. After that you're free to add new chapters as you need them.

What else you can do with chapters:

  • Write as the ideas come
Creativity doesn't follow a straight line. Chapters let you add to your story in any order. Write the ending first, or the middle. Or plan your chapter structure before writing a word. Enjoy much more control than you're used to from Word.

  • Restructure your writing, fast
Move chapters around, delete chapters, and slot new chapters between others in seconds. Learn how to reorder and delete chapters here β†’

  • Track your writing goals
At the bottom left is a word counter that updates in real time. Use it to set targets for writing, or easily spot large or small chapters in your book.

Pages

That pages on Tablo look like the pages of a book is no accident. The edges of the page on Tablo are set to the actual page width of a standard book. Write your book knowing that how the it looks on screen is how it will look in published form.

Here's a few more things to know about pages:

  • It's all one, long page
You write in single flowing columns. There are no fixed page starts and no need to add them. It's when you publish that Tablo will fully typeset your writing, add all pages and create a table of contents for your book (if it's to have one).

  • But it doesn't have to be
Force a new page to start if you need to. For example, you might want a summary page alone at the end of each chapter. Learn how to do that here β†’

  • Saving is automatic
A save occurs every few seconds. You can switch chapters, leave the page or completely close your browser and know your writing is safe.

Editing tools

There are two tools to familiarize yourself with.

  • + icon: Appears in the left margin while you are writing. Click it to open a menu of styles you can apply to the paragraph you're in, or to insert types of page content.

  • Text select toolbar: Appears whenever you select a word or paragraph. Use it to apply a formatting style (bold, italics, or underline) to the selected text, or insert a hyperlink. You can access styles and page content options from this menu, too.

Styles, formatting & alignment

You can create headings, format text, and align text left, center or right.

  • P / Paragraph: Regular body text.

  • H1 / Heading 1: The largest heading.

  • H2 / Heading 2: A smaller sub-heading.

  • Text alignment: Left-, center- or right-align text.

  • B / Bold: To bold text

  • I / Italics: To italicize text

  • U / Underline: To underline text

  • Link: To create a hyperlink

Types of content

These are the types of content you can add at any point in your chapter.

  • Bulleted list: Bullets.

  • Numbered list: Numbers.

  • Block quote: Italicizes text and marks it off from the rest of your writing.

  • Insert image: Adds an image from your computer.

  • Insert horizontal line: Adds a divider.

  • Forced page break: Forces the start of a new page.

Markdown shortcuts

While typing:

  • Type ** on either side of your text to bold.

  • Type * on either side of your text to italicize.

At the beginning of any line of text, try these:

  • Type * or - followed by space to create a bulleted list.

  • Type 1. followed by space to create a numbered list.

  • Type # followed by space to create an H1 heading.

  • Type ## followed by space to create an H2 sub-heading.

Writing & editing questions

Adding a new page

For now, you write in single flowing columns. There's no need to add pages. It's after you submit your book for publishing that Tablo will split your writing into pages.

If you'd like more control, you can force a new page to start. More on that here β†’

Changing the font

There isn't a way to change the font after selecting a book theme. You can apply styles (main heading, sub-heading) and change the format (bold, italics, underline).
